Telephone Contact refers to contact with victims during which time services and available support are
identified.
Other refers to other VOCA allowable services and activities not listed but are provided to assist crime victims
and witnesses including Restitution amounts being compiled and delivered on a monthly basis to victim of
crime as ordered by the Common Pleas Court, Municipal Court and the Juvenile Court.
HISTORY
The first grant was written in 1996 for a VOCA Award of $9162 and a total project total of $13,605.00.
Each year a grant has been applied for and awarded to the Hocking County Victim Assistance Program.
For the 2004-2005 Grant Award, the VOCA request was approved for $36,155 with a project match by the
Commissioners of $12,052 bringing a Project Total of $48,207. Unfornationlly, the last three years the
VOCA award has been frozen at this amount unlike crime which has continually increased during this
time. Also for the last three years no equipment has been allowed through the VOCA Grant. Fortunately,
in August 2004 a grant was awarded for a one-time purchase of a computer through a separate VOCA
grant. This couldn’t have come at a better time, since the Victim’s Coordinator system was outdated
and presently not functioning.

Both advocates must complete continuing education yearly to assist victims of crime. Some of the
achievements are listed below:
Conferences
The Hocking County Victim Assistance Program worked jointly with agencies from Fairfield County and Hocking County to
promote the Community Violence Prevention Conference.
Due to budget cuts, our staff was no longer able to participate but we are very proud of what we did accomplish
in three short years. Our program has also worked with Law enforcement agencies to present educational
training regarding domestic violence and sexual assaults. We have worked yearly to ensure that victims’
rights are remembered yearly by having educational articles printed in the Logan Daily News. We believe that
the best offense in fighting crime is education and awareness.
Past speakers have been Michael Pritchard, known for being a youth educator, humorist, actor, and former
probation officer. The host of the award-winning Peace Talks and Saving our Schools video series is known
across the United States for his ability to help young people gain self-awareness. We were honored to
have Michael Pritchard talk to the Logan-Hocking Middle School were students still remember his
presentation.
The Hocking County Victim Assistance Program has Michael Pritchard’s video series available for educational purposes for further information call 740-385-5343.
Another well known conference speaker is Dave Pelzer, who was the recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule
Award as well as being honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans in 1993. In 1994, Dave Pelzer
was the only American to be honored as one of The Outstanding Young Persons of the World. He also carried
the coveted Centennial flame for the 1996 Olympics. Dave’s first book, A Child Called ‘It” and his latest book,
Help Yourself, have both been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Dave’s incredible life story as been featured
on many television segments including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Barbara Walter’s The View. His New
York Bestsellers, A Child Called It, The Lost Boy, A Man Named Dave and Help Yourself are read in the schools by many of our youth. Dave is a living testament of resilience, faith in humanity and personal responsibility. It was
truly an honor to work with Dave Pelzer and to continue to have contact with him.
We have heard many speakers including Lt. General Tom Birdwell who was burnt over 80% of his body when
the terrorists crashed the plane into the Pentagon.
For more information on speakers or experts in their field, please contact us. Throughout our years
of training, we have come to meet many people who are professionals in their fields.
